IOANNA EFTHIMIOU "2 QUEENS IN MYKONOS" | 9. July - 22. July |
This year, Mykonos is a meeting place of the crowned nobility. Red carpets, knigh mours, light effects, paparazzi, trumpeters, blue-blooded nobility, amazing dance shows, all at Matoyianni. Two queens! Holding a scepter or a microphone, they will be there, for two weeks in the heart of summer, invited by Scala Gallery.
On Friday 9 July, 2010, 9.30 p.m., opens Ioanna’s Efthimiou personal exhibition, entitled 2 Queens in Mykonos. In this avant-garde event, two queens meet in Mykonos: Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Madonna, the queen of pop music.
Ioanna’s Efthymiou works of art are influenced by pop art. It was these works that intrigued the apparently "austere" Queen Elizabeth II who now has 9, in total, portraits of her, created by the artist. Those portraits of the Queen were part of the recent exhibition Ioanna Efthimiou held in London and which were made on the occasion of the Queen's 84th birthday.
The series with the portraits of the pop music queen comes from the artist’s exhibitions in Greece and Germany, following the concerts Madonna gave in the two countries. This is the first time these portraits -of Queen Elizabeth II and of Madonna- are exhibited together, as a unit, and this is due to the specific idea expressed by Scala Gallery which was thus wishing to make a comment on the cinematographic invasion of the "Kings of Mykonos".
Scala Gallery is a place of art at Matoyianni, Mykonos, that organizes exhibitions of modern Greek and foreign artists. Those exhibitions complement the permanent exhibitions of Yiorgos Kypris, Leoni Schmiedel, Yiorgos Maraziotis, Philippos Theodoridis, Brian Piccini, Angela Pipikios, Luis Orozco, Kristina Ristic, Elsi Pavlidi, Nikos Benos Palmer, Philippos Vasilakis, Eugeni Ilatovski, Vivi Chanioti.
It also offers a wide variety of hand-made jewels by: Metallon, Babylonia, Elena Syraka, Katerina Ioannidi, Mary Skylla, Skevi Afantiti, Anna Theocharaki.
